I learned about Eudora Welty as the namesake of the old e-mail program I used to use, Eudora. Yes, it was named after her and her story titled Why I Live At The P. O. She wrote short stories and novels about life in the south, especially about Mississipi, her home state. Back in the mid-1990s, I found the story about living at the back of the post office and found it interesting.
But, I had no idea that she was also a photographer! I learned that from the Lens Blog of The New York Times. Like her writing, her photography also focuses on the south. I found some of her work reminiscent of Walker Evans’ and some reminded me of Dorothea Lange. But the connection of the photographer to the subject and the location strongly comes through.
Visit the article on the Lens Blog and read more about Eudora Welty and enjoy her photography. So many photographers to know! More to come.
