Eudora Welty

May 14, 2019 by A. Cemal Ekin
Eudora Welty

I learned about Eudora Welty as the namesake of the old e-mail program I used to use, Eudora. Yes, it was named after her and her story titled Why I Live At The P. O. She wrote short stories and novels about life in the south, especially about Mississipi, her home state. Back in the mid-1990s, I found the story about living at the back of the post office and found it interesting.

But, I had no idea that she was also a photographer! I learned that from the Lens Blog of The New York Times. Like her writing, her photography also focuses on the south. I found some of her work reminiscent of Walker Evans’ and some reminded me of Dorothea Lange. But the connection of the photographer to the subject and the location strongly comes through.

Tomato-packers’ recess, Copiah County, Miss. 1936.

Visit the article on the Lens Blog and read more about Eudora Welty and enjoy her photography. So many photographers to know! More to come.

WOW–Eudora – Now thats a name from the past! Had that as my email and contact manger way back when.
Don’t laugh, I think Bill still uses it. Didn’t know she was a photographer either.

I didn’t think it was still available. There was a derivative in the Thunderbird farm but I think they dropped it too. It was my favorite then, now I am a Thunderbird fan.

Those old photographs have a certain look that moves me. Especially from a photographer whom I did not know as a photographer. I will search for more of her work as I work on other photographers I would like to introduce.

      Take care, Haluk,

      Cemal

I have enjoyed the NY Times Lens Blog for many years. But, unfortunately, I have learned today that it will be discontinued in the near future. I hope that it will morph into a new blog rather than totally disappearing. Where would I learn about these photographers? So, thanks for the memories, …
