SLC Day two: Wild Flowers

On Friday, Big rock and little rock after a good night sleep, we took off a little before 9 AM to drive up to see the wild flowers. The Little Cottonwood Canyon has several attractions, Alta being one of them. It is a major ski area and the start of the tram ride to the top of the mountain. As we drove toward Alta the landscape was impressive with pine forests, waterfalls, and even a moose sighting. After Alta, the flowers started showing their colors, and variety. Driving higher and higher, we started seeing more and more dense coverage of flowers. Although the dominant color was yellow of some kind of local sunflower, other varieties put on a great show when the conditions were right. [Read more...]

SLC Day One

The Wood bowl with garlic and onions 4 flight to Salt Lake City was reasonably smooth except the little kid behind me crying most of the way from Baltimore to Salt Lake City. Elif and Mina were waiting with a nice bunch of roses in Mina’s arms. After getting the suitcases we slowly walked to the parking lot and drove home. The weather was hot, but dry; hot is still hot though.

That evening we went to Sea Salt, Mina’s favorite restaurant nearby. They make her pasta just the way she likes, with olive oil and then Parmesan cheese grated on top. We enjoyed a couple of appetizers and shared a pizza. Back at home, Mina went to bed, we chatted a bit and did the same.

Here are some moments from the arrival and the next day

Probably because of the time shift and partly the flight fatigue, neither Jan nor I could sleep. So, we scrapped the plans for the next day and stayed home. The girls did some house work, I did some reading and a bit of photography. A bowl of onions and garlic stems kept me busy for a while; those photographs are converted to black-and-white then toned.

Mina’s School

Mina's School

We stopped at Mina’s school to see it from outside, but as luck would have it there were a couple of secretaries working and they let us in to take a close look at where Mina goes for her first years of education. It has large rooms for physical activity, music, and upstairs an art room is filled with craft materials. Mina took us around and told us which room was which. Come, take a walk with us …

A Quick Stroll in Temple Square

A couple of nights ago we had supper at Sea Salt, an Italian restaurant then drove downtown to see the lights at Temple Square. It was cold and crowded, so we entered the square on one side and walked to the other side where Elif picked us up. They do a really good job with the lights, each branch, each twig is individually wrapped in light strands. Here is a short video from that short stroll. (If you are on a slow connection I suggest that you start the video and right away pause it (not stop it) by clicking on the button with two vertical bars. That will cause the player to continue downloading the content which you can view a few minutes later by clicking on the play button.)

An Outing

Mina

This afternoon we drove to a local botanical garden to feed the ducks, but the garden was closed due to holiday schedule. We  continued to visit Mina’s school (another post coming) then went to a pastry shop, Tulie to share a piece of cake and have some coffee. Mina had her favorite cake, almond lemon tea cake, we all tasted it and shared a key lime pie. There, I took the following photographs of Mina.

We drove home for the day.
