Harkins Hall

I was on Providence College campus today and visited Harkins Hall, the main building where the executive offices are. There are some classrooms on a couple of the floors but most of the building is used as the administrative center of the college. The rotunda which is visible from the second floor balcony gave interesting views and I had the infrared camera with me and took a few photographs; I looked right, left, down, and up. Then I stepped outside and took a photograph of the center of the building.

My new infrared camera has returned from the modifications. It is a Canon EOS T2i which will allow me to use any of my lenses depending on my needs. This evening after supper I took a stroll around the block, Spring Green Road, Narragansett Parkway, Fair Street, Clear Water Street, to Spring Green Road, to home. Along the way I photographed frames that appealed to me, from trees, to a church, to tree trunks, and so on. The Asbury United Methodist Church is where Jan’s parents married and made it their church. John was on its board of trustees for many years and Ruthie played the organ and sang in the choir. Other than this special note, other photographs will identify themselves with their titles.

As to the camera, I am glad I made the switch from the G7 to T2i. It is a good deal smaller than my 5D Mk-II, and much lighter. but being an SLR with a larger sensor it produces much better quality images. And, of course, the lens choice is a major plus. On this expedition I used a Canon 17-40 mm lens on the T2i. Let see what you will think of the photographs.

Supermarket Infrared

While I waited for my wife to do her grocery shopping, I took a series of photographs with the IR-converted Canon G7. My aim was to provide a sense of motion and location in these photographs. The G7 is going to a new owner today and I await the conversion of a Canon T2i SLR to take infrared photographs. So, the G7 saga is closing with this “check out” at the supermarket.

The Magnificent Tree of Fair Street

I posted a photograph of the grand tree near home among the infrared photographs a few days ago. Since then, I went back and photographed the tree again. This post is only about that tree, and what a tree it is. It has majestic size, graceful proportions and shape, tremendous presence, and is hugely photogenic. I will likely go back there many times, now that I started photographing it I need to continue documenting it for everyone to enjoy.

Here it is, the magnificent tree of Fair Street.

(Note: A friend told me that the tree is a Red Beech tree and promised to find out more about this particular one.)

Infrared Season is Here

With the warming weather and budding trees,the time is ripe for more infrared photographs. I have been carrying my Canon G7 on sunny days when the infrared energy is high. I took several photographs at school, some vine clinging on the black metal door of Koffler Hall where my office is. Then, the other day I stopped before coming home, first at Ocean Avenue where RI Yacht Club is located. From there I took several photographs of Providence and the East Bay skyline and later stitched them to a panorama. While doing that a plane flew over, why not capture that? Then I parked on the Pawtuxet Bridge and took a series of photographs to stitch into another panorama. To top it off, I stopped on Fair street to photograph the magnificent, gigantic tree at the first curve. It is probably one of the best looking trees I have ever seen.

I think it is time to have the 20D converted for infrared duty.
