Newport-Westport From Air Issue 1: Nature’s Art — Two half-size (approx. 5.25″x8.25″) copies in one

I have just published the selected photographs from the Newport-Westport helicopter ride in a special layout magazine. Each printed copy will yield two identical copies with a simple guillotine cut at a printing house. Each will be approximately 5.25″ x 8.25″ and will open in the landscape orientation, bound on the short side.

There are 45 photographs collected in to 5 sets: Hand of Man, Salt Marshes, Shoreline, Swirls, The Water. Below are some samples from the photographs included in the magazine.

Helicopter Ride Over Newport

July 5, 2011 was the date, I had the helicopter ride that had been in the planning for a while courtesy of my graduating class and my sister and brother-in-law. It was a gorgeous day and Dennis picked me up around 2:00 PM and we drove to Newport. There was another couple going up for a short ride before us, we took some test shots, calibrated the cameras and patiently waited for the friendly staff of Bird’s Eye View Helicopters to escort us to the air field. The red chopper was waiting and the pilot was removing the doors for better visibility for us as we requested. I sat in the front, on the left hand side of the helicopter and Dennis sat behind the pilot on the right. Fasten seat belts, instructions on how to use the intercom through the headphones, and off we went.

The flight was a short 45 minutes; time flew as we had fun. I am sharing a small collection of photographs to give you a taste of the ride. There are quite a few more that will require selecting, editing, and making them ready for presentation which may very well be in print format. Watch a short take off video I recorded, then move on to the photographs.

Great Salt Lake Folio – 5

This is the final installment of the series on the Great Salt Lake. Vegetation around and in the Great Salt Lake does not impress the viewer with lush foliage or colorful flowers. However, the halophiles, those that require high salinity create interesting patterns against the colors of the lake. Mostly marshes around the periphery and algae in the water, the greenish clumps against the colorful water present painting-like views. This folio is available in the store for purchase.

I am getting close to finishing this project. This folio is about the limits of everything. Water meets land or air with a boundary, colors change creating another boundary, various shapes are formed or erased by virtue of their boundaries being there or becoming diffuse. The ecosystem of the Great Salt Lake is so diverse with different minerals in water, living organisms, land formation, evaporation, all working to create many boundaries that are clearly visible from the air. The Found Patterns Folio is the new addition to the Great Salt Lake series. With eight photographs, it presents the patterns created by nature and by human touch. The nature’s patterns with a palette of minerals and evaporation challenge the canvas of most painters both in structure and artistry. Human touch, on the other hand, creates direct patterns which are easy to identify or through interference with nature which are much harder to discern.
